Scientists are constantly researching and developing new techniques in the field of prenatal testing. In recent months, the field of Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) has progressed in leaps and bounds, gaining attention and momentum around the world, from USA to Europe and Asia. NIPT technologies are screening tests able to detect Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities simply by analysing blood sample from pregnant women.
Before this test was available, typically expectant mothers would have to endure Amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) putting them at unnecessary risk, given that 95% of these women will discover that their baby is risk free after all. NIPT tests are also proving to be far more accurate than traditional tests, with accuracy rates as high as 99%.
